Every year in January or February, the bird people of the world get restless. Our fingers start to itch to switch on those incubators and we long to hear chicks chirping and broody hens clucking to their clutches.

It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year for us- hatching season. As the peacocks and pheasant males finish up growing in their trains and tails and feather wardrobes as they begin practicing their displays, and all the hens begin to near laying time- it’s time we start to get down to the nitty gritty questions for the coming breeding season…

What’s on the list to add to your bird collection this year?

Sometimes you just want to build your breeding pens or add new bloodlines to the breeds you already have. Or maybe you’ve got your eyes on a new species or variety? Either way, it’s high time to put your detective hat on and start to looking for those birds you want.

Depending on the type you are looking to add to your flock, finding them could be quite easy or downright difficult. For species or breeds that are in short supply, getting on a waitlist prior to the hatch season is imperative. You must know what you want, how many you want and what age you’d like- do you want hatching eggs? Young unsexed chicks? Sexed pairs? Proven breeders?
