Black East Indie Ducks
I love a black bird- Svart Hona and Ayam Cemani chickens caught my eye and never left my mind the first time I saw them, so naturally when I heard of a duck breed with the same all-black-everything properties I was quite intrigued. These adorable inky black birds are thought to be the oldest breed of bantam duck, weighing in at under 2 pounds. They are similar in size to call ducks but are more shy and also more quiet than their equally pint size counterparts.
East Indies feathers have the most lustrous sheen, highlighting a beautiful emerald green in the sunlight. Their eyes, beaks and most of their feet are also black, however some females do begin to develop white feathers as they age.
Like Cayuga ducks, East Indie females begin their laying cycle with nearly black shelled eggs. The coloring fades as the laying season progresses, but the black to silver shaded eggs are always a neat addition to the spring egg palette.
As of Spring 2020, we have a pair of East Indies and hope to offer ducklings and/or hatching eggs depending on how prolific our little black quackers are!
